Institute scope
The Institute’s scope includes applied ethics and the fundamental questions it raises. Applied ethics is of utmost importance to the field of medicine and new developments made in the field of biology. Owing to this, the Institute’s work focuses primarily on bioethics, and medical ethics. However, general ethical issues pertaining to scientific work are, of course, also considered. An interdisciplinary approach is essential and is made possible by the conducive new framework provided by the inter-university Institute. In the past, the field of philosophical ethics was criticized for its lack of practical relevance. Nowadays, following its rise in popularity, the field of applied ethics is accused of neglecting the theory it rests upon. In response to this accusation, which is indeed justified, the Institute does its utmost to provide solid theoretical foundations in applied ethics. Both content and methodology are included and are rooted in norm and value theories on the one hand, and in metaethics on the other.
Cooperation between the Salzburg University and the Paracelsus Medical University provides the best possible conditions for work in applied ethics.
The Institute publicizes its research results in lectures, conferences, workshops and symposia in order to increase awareness of and discussion on these fundamental issues. Discussions and conferences, in which results are analyzed and solid tenets for responsible practice are established, also play a vital role in enhancing this field’s standing.
