Applications

We appreciate your interest in studying medicine at the Paracelsus Medical University. The Paracelsus University selects its students according to objective criteria and annually awards 50 study places to the best candidates. The limited number of study places is open to a large number of applicants. We kindly ask you to read the application and selection process information very carefully.



Application period

The registration period for the academic year of 2012/2013 is from 10 January 2011 to 16 April 2012. Applications will only be accepted within this period.

The study of medicine at the Paracelsus University is organized in years rather than semesters and is comprised of complementary modules. The course begins in late summer.


Admission requirements for application

Before you submit your application, please check carefully whether you meet the requirements:

  • Under 35 years of age
  • Copy of documentation certifying eligibility for tertiary education pursuant to § 64 para 1 University Act 2002 (= European Baccalaureate Certificate, equivalent qualification) General University Entrance Qualification.
  • Excellent German and English language skills
  • Latinum. As a prerequisite for the study of medicine, legislation demands evidence of 10 hours of Latin per week in high school (in Austria). Should you have other qualifications in Latin, a confirmation that this qualification is equivalent to the Austrian qualification is required from the respective school and must be included in the application. The Latinum can be completed by the end of the 1st academic year (course offered by the Paracelsus University). If this is not achieved, admission to the 2nd academic year will not be granted.
  • Science subjects
    Attendance certificates and proof of successful completion of at least one lesson of biology per week from the 8th year of schooling onwards, or proof of a supplementary examination in biology and environmental science. More information can be found here.
  • Voluntary internship - a minimum of 4 weeks
    This is required as proof that the candidate has explored their area of professional interest. Confirmation of this internship is required from the responsible body (hospital, paramedic center, nursing home). 
    - An internship in a doctor's practice (specialist, general practitioner, dentist) Exception: doctor’s practise of the parents or related doctors.
    - "Zivildienst" (national community service) will only count towards this internship if it included direct contact with patients.
    - Only candidates who obtain a “Reifeprüfung” (secondary school leaving certificate e.g. high school diploma) in the year of their application to the University may apply for a voluntary internship in the summer preceding the commencement of study.
    In this case a confirmation must be supplied in advance.
  • Payment of the processing fee (further information available here)
  • Applicants from EU countries must meet the entry requirements for the study of human medicine in their country of origin and must submit a secondary school leaving certificate.
  • Applicants from non-EU countries must meet the entry requirements for the study of human medicine in their country of origin. A translated, accredited certificate must be submitted. Please note:

Only those candidates who have successfully completed the selection process at the Paracelsus University will be admitted. It is not possible to join the degree course mid-term. 


 



Application 

For your complete application:

1. Please fill in our online application form
(only available within the application period). This form records personal and statistical data.

2. Please send the following application documents by post:

  • CV (tabular form) with a scanned photograph
  • Letter of motivation
  • Report cards from the 11th school year onwards
  • Secondary school leaving certificate or a General University Entrance Qualification for the study of medicine
    - Candidates with a pending university entrance exam may submit the certificate at a later date (deadline 30 June).
    - Certificates issued with a grading scale different to the Austrian system of 1-5 must include a grading scale key. (More information on grade conversions)
    - Certificates which are not issued in German must be a accompanied by a translated and accredited equivalent.
  • Proof of a relevant voluntary internship (min. 4 weeks)
  • Proof of payment of processing fee
  • Proof of other training and/or activities (Only those qualifications included in your application pack will be considered.)

Please note:

  • Application is possible only twice (e.g. 2010 and 2011)
  • Do not send us any original documents or certificates. Original documents will only be requested on invitation to an interview.
  • As communication with applicants is primarily done via e-mail, you must have a valid e-mail address and ensure that messages are checked regularly.
  • Only complete applications will be considered for the entrance examination. Application documents will not be returned.

Processing fee:

A processing fee is required for registration. The processing fee is Euro130.00 for an application made between 12 January and 31 March. A fee of Euro 240.00 will be charged for applications between 1 April and 14 April. Please include proof of payment in your application documents.

Please note:

Please transfer the processing fee not until you receive an invoice number after the online application process.

The processing fee is not refundable. Only payments made in due form and time will be recognized.
