Welcome

The Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg was founded in 2002 with the support of its founders and benefactors, the pro-vincial, the municipal and regional administrations of Salzburg and private sponsors. The Paracelsus University is a young university with the highest professional standards. We consider our mission  in teaching and research in the field of human medicine and in related health sciences disciplines. Our stu-dents are trained as MDs and are able to attain a PhD in mole-cular medicine at our university institutes, at the Salzburg Uni-versity Hospital, and at selected teaching hospitals. In addition, we offer a variety of  postgraduate programs and degree courses. At the heart of all our endeavors lie the patients. The Paracelsus University ‘s hallmark is its international network in its teaching and research. Constructive and beneficial partner-ships in medical and scientific fields have been established with the Mayo Medical School (USA), Charles University in Prague, Capital Medical University Beijing (CMU), the universities of Yale, Milan, Cambridge, North Florida, Glasgow as well as the national universities.

Securing Salzburg in its development as a scientific center and economic hotspot  is one of the Paracelsus Medical University’s main objectives. In addition to funding its research institutes, the Paracelsus Private Medical University supports the implementation of scientific projects at the university clinics and institutes with research funds.

The health care campaign „dm sun kids“ for the healthy consumption of sun light in cooperation with Paracelsus Medical University

16.06.2009

Together with the Ministry of Health and the Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg “dm drogerie markt Austria” launches the biggest health care campaign for the healthy consumption of sun light. Via the campaign “dem sun kids” (“dm Sonnenkinder”) 38.000 kids from kindergartens, their parents and teachers will be reached.

The initiative is scientifically accompanied by dermatologists of the Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg, respectively by members of the University Clinic for Dermatology. Christoph Lanschützer, MD accents the importance of a comprehensive prevention against skin cancer: “Each unnecessary skin contact with the UV-light of the sun increases the aging of the skin and the development of virulent tumors. Children receive up to 80 percent of the over-all UV-radiation exposure of their whole life before the age of 18. The skin of kids is weakly protected because the brown skin pigment Melanin is only slightly developed at that age.”

To prevent kids from receiving sunburn they should be protected with high sun protection factors from 30 to 50+. Infants under the age of two should not be exposed to direct sun light as Christoph Lanschützer, MD argues: “It is important to avoid the aggressive sun at noon and to take care for an effective headpiece – especially for kids. Clothing is the best UV-protection. By the way – 50 percent of the UV-radiation is also received in the shades.”
