"Neurobiology in Psychotherapy"
Key issue: "Relationship and Complexity"
July 3-5, 2009
The interesting conference to connect the disciplines neurobiology and psychotherapy took place in a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere in the „large auditorium“ at the University of Salzburg. The key issue of the conference was oriented to „relationship and complexity“ and tried to conform to the fact, that the brain is a highly complex and nonlinear system, where self-organizing processes are proceeded permanently.
Among other things it was reported about the use of imaging procedures (i. e. functional magnetic resonance tomography, fMRT) to present the progress of therapy. One example, provided by the young and innovative Institute of Synergetic and Psychotherapy Research at the Paracelsus Medical Private University Salzburg in cooperation with the Psychosomatic Clinic Windach, the Medical University Wien and the Ludwig-Maximillian University München showed fascinating results of an fMRT-study about psychotherapy in OCD patients (obsessive-compulsive disorder). By combining neurobiological and psychological aspects in process research, a fascinating and interdisciplinary field of work is emerging, oriented to the theory of complex systems and self-organisation (Synergetic). The new release of synergetic navigation system (SNS) and its clinical therapeutic applications was presented in Salzburg for the first time. This system shows from a psychological perspective - complementary to the neuroscience methods - a detailed picture of psychotherapeutically processes.
Milestones of highly up-to-date research results were presented in lectures of Wolf Singer (Frankfurt a. M.), Peter Tass (Jülich), Wolfgang Miltner (Jena), Georg Northoff (Magdeburg), Dieter Vaitl (Gießen), Günter Schiepek (Salzburg), Simon Eickhoff (Jülich), Hans Förstl (München), Nils Birbaumer (Tübingen), Andreas Bartels (Tübingen), Josef Aldenhoff (Kiel), Henrik Walter (Bonn), Anna Buchheim (Innsbruck) and Christian Schubert (Innsbruck) to a large, responsive and very interested audience.

In addition, the participants had the opportunity to take part at one of eight workshops (daily, parallel sessions), to delve into single subjects. The subsequent congress in two years is planned to be hosted in the heart of Salzburg again.
