Postgraduate Degree in Molecular Medicine

Degree Structure

Degree structure

Students are given the opportunity to pursue a degree which offers a combination of medicine, biology, biochemistry and genetics. By acquiring a deeper understanding of modern methodological approaches and thorough training in specific scientific methods, students are given the skills to address, plan and implement complex tasks in research. An interdisciplinary approach is taken in the implementation of genome research on diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases. Students acquire the prerequisites for a career in science whilst learning how to approach and master complex research projects independently. This is achieved through the exposure to and communication of the latest findings in research.

The aim of the PhD program is to produce outstanding research graduates whose scientific work at the Paracelsus Medical University complies with international standards, whilst strengthening the position of research in keeping with the University’s philosophy.

The curriculum has been designed to meet the standards and requirements of a PhD in Molecular Bioscience according to the "Committee on Education of the
International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology"
whilst emphasizing the relevance of human medicine.

Usually the degree is completed in 3 years (no less than 2.5 years). In the first 2 semesters, students receive a comprehensive foundation in basic natural science subjects and modern methodology. The 3rd semester focuses on molecular basics in combination with specific disorders.

During the 1st semester, students are assigned to a scientific work group.

At the end of the 2nd semester a dissertation topic is chosen in agreement with the respective scientific work group.

At the end of the 3rd semester, there is an interim examination, which marks the end of the first stage (semesters 1-3). The second stage (semesters 4-6) focuses mainly on project-oriented research work, which may be published in journals. This forms the basis of the dissertation.

The PhD examination takes place between the 5th and 6th semesters. Admission requirements for the examination include proof of attendance, proof of the successful completion of the interim examination and the submission of a dissertation.

Graduation
On successful completion and approval of the PhD examination, the graduate is conferred the academic title of Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Medicine by the Paracelsus Medical University.
