Pharmacology Today is a yearly meeting in July, organized by the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg. This meeting is part of the final seminar month organized for our medical students at the end of the fifth and final year before graduation. The organizer is Prof. Markus Paulmichl (PMU) and Prof. Hans Winkler (MUI). This meeting also addresses physicians of all disciplines, and is accredited by the Austrian Medical Association. Therefore,attendance to the meeting will be honored by 5 points for each day as part of the mandatory continuous learning that appliesto all Austrian physicians. Every year well-recognized speakers will cover a special topic(s) within 2 hours, followed by extensive discussion with the attendees. The 2010 meeting will be held from July 5th to July 6th from 8am until 12am. Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided after the formal part of the meeting. There will be additional time for discussion throughout lunch. This years topics are (i) Development of new drugs, and (ii) Regulatory affairs and Pharmacovigilance.

The speakers will give an overview in the respective fields. Prof. Clapham will give an overview regarding newly discovered ion channels and their respective potential as drug targets. Dr. Singer will discuss the process needed for the discovery of new drugs, as well as the role of public and private institutions in this process. Prof. Laslop will focus on the Austrian specific Regulatory affairs involved in drug registration, and compare the local process with that of the EMEA. Dr. Schade will summarize the mechanisms in phase 4 of drug registration, and explain how those mechanisms improve drug safety. In addition, Dr. Schade will outline the pharmacovigilance project in Austria.
