The Salzburger Landeskliniken (Salzburg County Hospitals) were founded by three county-owned hospitals, namely St. Johanns Hospital, Christian Doppler Clinic, County Hospital of St. Veit, as well as the Institute for Sports Medicine in 2004. This was a decisive step towards an improvement in administration and organization of each individual facility.
The merger has enabled the sharing of resources and synergies whilst improving overall medical care. Restructuring was necessary for economic reasons and to ensure that the highest level of medical care could be provided in future. The Salzburg County Hospitals received recognition as a legal entity on 1.1.2004 and are now part of the umbrella organization Gemeinnützigen Salzburger Landeskliniken Betriebsgesellschaft mbH. The sole shareholder is the county of Salzburg.
