Neurological and Psychiatric Diseases

Neurocognition, the main research area, addresses areas such as memory, brain-power, dementia and neurodegeneration using the clinical data collected and methods such as MRI, PET and SPECT.

Metabolic and genetic studies will provide new insights into the pathogenesis of strokes. The results of these studies will be implemented in stroke prevention. Using epidemiological and molecular biological methods, models and approaches will be developed for future prevention of depression and suicide. Appropriate preventive measures are currently being developed by intensifying clinical work and public awareness.

With regard to diseases of the spine, morphological findings are being researched in relation to a patient’s psychological state. The combination of imaging methods and psychological processes will lead to a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Genetic and molecular biological studies, together with new methods such as chip technology will stimulate new insights into the causes, diagnoses and treatment of degenerative and inflammatory diseases of the nervous system.

This research is being carried out by the clinics and institutes of the Christian Doppler Clinic in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, various departments of the Universities of Munich, Innsbruck and Lausanne, the National Queen Square Hospital, London, the Elisabethinen Hospital, Linz and is supported by the regional government of Salzburg.
