About us

Director:  Univ.-Prof. Dr. Markus Paulmichl


The Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg was founded on 1 October 2007. Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Markus Paulmichl was appointed as chair. The Institute is located within the Paracelsus Medical University, which is on Strubergasse 21. The Institute is committed to excellence in both teaching and research of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Pharmacology is the discipline devoted to the description and research of the effect of drugs.

The Institute organizes, coordinates and teaches the pharmacology course in the 3rd year of medical school. In the 4th year of medical school, students participate in their ‘Research-trimester’, and in the 5th year the Institute organizes the final seminar in pharmacology. In addition, the Institute offers students a 3-year the post-graduate course  in molecular medicine’.

The research interest of the Institute is on molecular pharmacology and pharmaco-genetics. The institute has intense collaborations with the following institutions: Medical University of Innsbruck, (Austria), University of Vienna (Austria), University of Milan (Italy), University of Naples (Italy), University of Tübingen (Germany), Hospital Ramon y Cajal, Madrid (Spain), University of Cambridge, UK, University of Oxford, UK; Mayo-Clinic, Rochester (USA), Harvard Medical School, USA, University of Philadelphia, USA, University of Chicago, USA

In order to foster the international exchange between the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology and foreign Universities we installed in the year 2008 the Resch-Award, which will be granted every year.
