Paracelsus lives.
What’s in a name? Para Celsus?
One thing is certain - Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus of Hohenheim, also known as Paracelsus, has very aptly lent his name to the new university, which has such a critical and innovative approach to medicine. There is, however, no consensus concerning the origin of his byname. Whereas some experts assume a Latinization of the word "Hohenheim" ("Celsus" stands for "high"), others refer to sources mentioning the Roman medical theorist Aulus Cornelius Celsus. As Paracelsus, among others, argued against theories that were still accepted in the late Middle Ages, a further interpretation of his name "against Celsus" was also widespread.
Unique private foundation
Paracelsus lives on in his legendary saying that "all things are poison and nothing is without poison, only the dose permits something not to be poisonous". Above all, Paracelsus lives on in the medical university bearing his name. One of the University’s distinctive features is that it was established in the form of a private foundation. Subsequently its permanent status could be established and its common benefit pointed out. In creating the Foundation Board, a supervisory body was instituted. The foundation made it possible for donations and additional donations of capital to be set off against tax. The Medical Faculty Salzburg - Private Foundation had already been founded in 1999 following the "University Accreditation Act" which made possible the creation of privately funded universities. Three years after the founding of the University in 2002, it was renamed Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg - Private Foundation.
