University Library of PMU

In order to meet the demand of the medicine and the enormous annual increase in knowledge, Paracelsus Medical Private University relies above all on the online access to medical journals in equipping the 260 m2 large library. Licensed journals and databases are available on the campus of the Paracelsus Medical Private University and the Salzburg University Hospital.

Library Service changes due to Coronavirus

As of July 1, the open stacks collection and the reading area will be again accessible to the public. Therefore, ordering media through the PMU online catalog from the open stacks collection will be discontinued from that time on. Since special guidelines and safety precautions still apply, the following health-related measures must be observed:

  • Before entering the library, visitors must disinfect their hands using the disinfectant dispenser provided and positioned next to the entrance door.
  • We kindly ask you to always keep the required minimum safety distance of one meter.
  • The seating arrangement in the reading area and at the PCs, intended to guarantee safe social distancing, may not be changed.
  • Tables and keyboards must be disinfected by each user before use (disinfectant is provided).

The following resources are available:

  • more than 5.000 licensed online journals in the area of medicine, chemistry, natural sciences, biology, pharmacy, physics
  • freely accessible journals of the Electronic Journals Library (EZB)
  • licensed databases (Medline, Evidence Based Medicine Reviews – Cochrane Library, Web of Knowledge, Journal Citation Reports, CINAHL)
  • freely accessible databases of the Database-Infosystem (DBIS)
  • e-books

The University Library serves the students of Paracelsus Medical University and also the various educational units of the Salzburg University Hospital as research library. In addition, the University Library performs a number of functions as a central service for the university and the Salzburg University Hospital.

In addition to the University Library, students of the Paracelsus Medical Private University have access to the printed journals and the book collections of the university clinics and the library of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg.

Additional electronic resources during coronacrisis

The following electronic resources are currently available in addition to our existing digital collection.

Electronic journals

The Electronic Journals Library lists all electronic journals of the library. In addition to the scientific journals held by the library, it also displays freely available titles as well as journals to which the university has not acquired access. It is not possible to search directly for articles (authors, titles, etc.) on the platform.

Subscribed journals are only accessible in full text within the campus network. Outside the campus network, access is possible via the external access (EZproxy). You can find information on this on our page Connect from off campus (EZproxy).

Electronic databases

The Database-Infosystem (DBIS) lists and describes different databases. They can be sorted and displayed by subject as well as by title. In addition to the licensed databases, the databases that are freely accessible are also displayed.

Short cuts to the following subject fields and databases:
Medicine
Pharmacy
Public Health
Journal Citation Reports (Impact Factor List)

Conditions of access
Licensed databases and reference works are only accessible on the university campus or at the university clinics. Members of the university can also access them off campus by using the external access (EZproxy.)

Special conditions may apply to the use of licensed resources (marked in DBIS as “campus”). These may vary depending on the publisher or the provider. Therefore, please note the terms of use provided on the platforms.

Generally applies:

  • Access to the full text is granted exclusively to members of the Paracelsus Medical Private University or the Salzburg University Hospital.
  • The full texts of articles/chapters may only be printed or saved for personal use and not for commercial purposes.
  • Systematic download of articles, chapters or search results, especially by web crawlers (search bots) is prohibited.
  • Full text may not be passed on to third parties, neither electronically nor in printed form.

With the exception of the UpToDate database, you can use our licensed databases also off campus. Further information can be found on our page Connect from off campus (EZproxy)

EndNote Basic

EndNote Basic is a web-based bibliographic-management program that allows you to easily collect and manage bibliographic data as well as PDF attachments, tables, images, etc. It will help you to correctly cite the literature references in text and to create a complete bibliography. The Paracelsus Medical University and the Salzburg University Hospital have access to EndNote Basic as a part of the license for the Web of Science database. Compared to EndNote Desktop, the range of function is more limited, but covers the needs of the students to a large extent. Unlike EndNote Desktop, it is web-based and therefore accessible from anywhere via the Internet. A major advantage of EndNote Basic is the possibility to work collaboratively. EndNote Desktop and Basic version can be used in parallel.

Access / account
Students and employees of the Paracelsus Medical University and the Salzburg University Hospital can create a free account for Endnote Basic. To register for an account, please go the Web of Science database or to the page www.myendnoteweb.com. The required registration must be completed within the IP range of the university or the University Hospital. After the registration, you can access your EndNote Basic account from anywhere for one year. At the end of the one-year period, you will need to register once again in an authenticated session (on the campus network).

Cite While You Write
With the EndNote Basic plug-in, you can access the EndNote Basic database and automatically format citations and bibliographies as you write your work in Microsoft Word. You can download the plug-in from EndNote Basic under menu item "Options". After installing the Cite While You Write plug-in, the EndNote Basic toolbar is automatically integrated in Microsoft Word. For more detailed information, please refer to the Cite While You Write Help Pages of EndNote Basic.

EndNote for iPad App
An EndNote for iPad application can be also purchased on iTunes. In addition, EndNoteSync can be used to synchronize the desktop and the EndNote Basic version.

You can find videos and user guides for EndNote Basic on our homepage under the "E-learning" tab.

The Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) has signed two publishing agreements for OA publishing. These agreements refer to subscription journals (hybrid OA). Members of the Paracelsus Medical University or the University Hospital Salzburg can publish their articles in journals published by Springer or Wiley Publishing Open Access without any additional costs (Article Processing Charges, APC). Additionally, all university members have online access to over 2.000 Springer journals and over 1.500 Wiley journals.

OA-Publishing in Springer journals:
Who can use the offer?
Members of the Paracelsus Medical University or the University Hospital Salzburg

  • who are a Corresponding Author
  • whose article has been accepted for a journal suitable for Open Choice
  • whose articles belong to one these types: Original Paper, Review Paper, Brief Communication or Continuing Education

Which journals are covered by the agreement?
A complete list of the 1,600 subscription journals in which you can publish open access at no additional cost may be found here. Color-in-print-charges are not covered by this agreement and must be paid by the author.

How does it work?
Once an article has been accepted, the Corresponding Author will be asked to confirm their affiliation to Paracelsus Medical University and to agree to the Open Access terms. Please use your institutional email address to facilitate verification of your affiliation. If an article is published under this agreement, the author is requested to ensure that the PMU is listed in the article’s PDF format.

Further information regarding publishing via Springer Compact can be found here.

How does it work?
After your article is accepted, select the option “Online Open” on the Wiley-Author Services Dashboard. Confirm your affiliation to the Paracelsus Medicinal Private University. Wiley will then check your eligibility for funding. Information about the agreement can be found here. Furthermore, a short instruction about the process is available on the Wiley-Author Services Interface (PDF-Link).

What are the advantages for the authors?
