The "Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria" (AQ Austria) of the Republic of Austria approved the application for accreditation of the "Master Study in Nursing Science" at Paracelsus Medical Private University on September 24, 2012. In addition, on March 28, 2014, the application for extension of the accreditation was approved for six years.

The first master’s degree study program in nursing science started in April 2014 with max. 25 study places. It is designed as a combined online/attendance course which can be completed while working. The master study in nursing science has a nursing science, practical nursing care and research-oriented profile. After completing the study (four semesters/120 ECTS), the students receive the grade of "Master of Science in Nursing", or abbreviated - "MScN".

Profile

The main goal of the Institute for nursing science is to educate its graduates as competent and methodologically versed scientists in the nursing care field. To this purpose, along with the scientific abilities and the current professional contents, they receive also competences in critical thinking, self-study and connecting the theory to the practice.

Our educational focus in the master’s degree study program Nursing Science is first in the presentation of the main pillars of the healthcare (nursing care) provision (hospitals, outpatient services, hospices, nursing homes) – both in the German-speaking regions and in selected countries in Europe and beyond. In order to evaluate the healthcare provision, it is not only necessary to show the current status quo in these individual sectors of the nursing care provision, but also to consider generally how and why this current status has emerged in the German-speaking regions. In retrospect and by looking at the present situation, it is worth to present the challenges in the sectoral areas, the care gaps in the preventive, curative and rehabilitative nursing care provision, and to find practical solutions. Thereby the inclusion of the medical sector is absolutely necessary.

Already during the confrontation with the aforementioned main points, the students are familiarised with the principles of the scientific work. They learn the secure application of the scientific works and the use of the scientific literature.

The preventive healthcare gains an increasingly greater importance. Here, too, the nursing sciences can make decisive contributionsby scrutinising the existing preventive programs and developing new prevention concepts and programs for health promotion.

The Institute for nursing science and practice in Salzburg reacts and research to the social, demographic and medical developments in the area of study in order to shape the future of healthcare based on the given needs. Our goal is to develop the research for the well-being of all participants in the healthcare area, in particular of the patients and the clients, but also to make sure that this new knowledge finds its way into the practice. The interconnection between research and teaching, between theory and practice, provides to the professional field of the nursing care a scientific base which ensures the modern patient care and fulfils the requirements of the Austrian healthcare and nursing care law, the orientation of the care practice towards the current scientific knowledge.
