ÖAW Funding

The Austrian Academy of Sciences supports highly qualified scientists with scholarship programs such as DOC, MAX KADE or L'ORÉAL and awards in various research areas.

DOC

With the DOC funding program, the ÖAW supports highly qualified doctoral candidates of all ages from all fields of research. The fellowship enables young researchers to focus on the preparation of their dissertation with a clear time frame.

Requirements:

  • Diploma and Master's degree completed a maximum of two years ago,
  • dissertation at a university in Austria and
  • submission of a proposal and a letter of recommendation from the dissertation supervisor.

Funding:

  • 38,000 euros (gross/gross) per year.
  • Additional application for travel allowance of max. 500,- Euro per year for active participation in conferences or research stays abroad possible.
  • A cost allowance of max. 1,900 euros (gross/gross) per year is provided for childcare.
  • DOC fellowships are awarded for 24, 30 or 36 months.

L’ORÉAL Austria

Within the framework of the L'ORÉAL Austria Fellowship Program, scholarships are awarded to young female scientists in medicine, natural sciences or mathematics at the beginning of their scientific career or to support their (re)entry into a scientific career.

The objective of the scholarship is in particular:

  • Completion of a research project or dissertation
  • Elaboration of a research project for application to funding organizations
  • Reintegration after a research stay abroad or after parental leave

Prerequisites:

  • Doctoral/PhD studies started no more than three years ago (Prae-doc) or
  • Doctoral/PhD studies completed no more than four years ago (post-doc),
  • Austrian citizens or have lived in Austria for at least three years,
  • Submission of a concrete project in Austria in the field of basic research,
  • Presentation of publications (= peer reviewed articles or book publications).

Funding:

  • The amount of the fellowship is 25.000,- Euro gross.
  • Fellowships are awarded for 8 - 12 months (PhD students) or 6 - 8 months (post-docs).

Key data:

  • The selection process for a L'ORÉAL Austria fellowship takes approximately four months.
  • In general one call for applications per year. Submission deadlines: Beginning of March.

MAX KADE

With the Max Kade USA Fellowships, the Max Kade Foundation in New York supports scientists from all fields of research who want to carry out a research stay in the USA. Candidates are expected to be in Austria at the time of application and to return to Austria upon completion of the research stay.

Prerequisites:

  • Completed diploma studies in human medicine (Dr.med.univ., Dr.med.dent.) or doctoral studies (Dr., PhD) a maximum of 10 years ago and proof of research experience through scientific publications,
  • Austrian citizenship or center of life in Austria for at least three years in the last ten years and
  • Submission of an invitation from the selected research institution in the US.

Funding:

  • 56,500.- USD per year
  • In addition, travel allowances as well as allowances for partners and children are granted (see fellowship rates).
  • MAX KADE - Fellowships are awarded for 12 months.

  • Duration of the selection process four to six months
