Paracelsus Medical University

About us

Paracelsus Medical University (PMU) is an institution organised as a private foundation with locations in Salzburg and Nuremberg. Teaching, research and patient care – these are the three pillars on which the university was founded in 2002, and which continue to have the highest priority. With 22 university institutes, three research centres and six research programs, it was possible to build – together with the Salzburg University Hospitals –a first-class educational offer and excellent research at the Salzburg location. In February 2014, the Paracelsus Medical University built, in cooperation with the Nuremberg Hospital, a second location in Nuremberg. Since August 2014, also future doctors have been educated there within the framework of the human medicine study program.

The education offer of Paracelsus University in Salzburg comprises the study of human medicine, the study in pharmacy (subject to the accreditation with the winter semester 2017/18) and nursing science as well as postgraduate doctorate degree study programs in medical science, molecular medicine and nursing & allied health sciences, as well as a number of university and further education programs.

Organisation

Legal entity of PMU is the "Paracelsus Medical Private University Salzburg – Private Foundation". Legal form of a private foundation was selected in order to emphasise the durability and the non-profit status of the work and activities of Paracelsus University. The Foundation Board guarantees the funding and execution of all measures which contribute to the operation and maintenance of the university or are necessary and/or appropriate. One half of the composition of the Foundation Board is delegated periodically upon proposal of the sponsor State of Salzburg, while the other half is elected at a meeting of the sponsors. The Foundation Board elects a Management Board of three members for a three-year term, which reports to the Foundation Board.

Cooperations in study and research

The international networking in the study and research is one of the central characteristic features of Paracelsus Medical University. The cosmopolitan attitude of the university is expressed in many ways: from the intensive competence exchange, through the top class networks – in particular in the other European countries and the United States – and up to the consistent support of the foreign language competence of the students. This clearly expressed international self-perception has proved to be extremely attractive for the students, teachers and researchers.

In particular, the long and intensive cooperation with the Natural Science Faculty of the Salzburg University has to be mentioned, as well as the cooperation with the Salzburg University Hospital and the 21 teaching hospitals in Austria and in the neighbouring countries. At the Nuremberg location, the Paracelsus University cooperates with the Nuremberg Hospital and Georg Simon Ohm Technical University. International partners among many other institutions are the Mayo Medical School/Mayo Clinic (USA), Yale University (USA), Harvard University (USA), University of Milan (I), Capital Medical University (CN), University of Cambridge (GB) and Brock University (CA).
