Anatomy and Cell Biology

Coordinator: Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Jan Pruszak

The Institutes of Anatomy and Cell biology of the Paracelsus Medical Private University represent the subjects anatomy and cell biology in teaching and research at he locations Salzburg and Nuremberg.

The Institutes focus on:

  • Teaching of anatomy in the curriculum of the Diplomstudiengang "Human Medicine" in the 1st and 2nd year at Paracelsus Medical University (Salzburg and Nuremberg), with approx. 650 full hours of teaching as well as in the curriculum of the study of Pharmacy.
  • Teaching in the doctorate study of Medical Science (Ph.D.) at Paracelsus Medical University (Salzburg)
  • Research on cellular interactions in human neural development and stem cell biology (Salzburg)
  • The research on form-function relationships of the human tissues under physiological and pathophysiological conditions, with a focus on the musculoskeletal system and the eye (Salzburg and Nuremberg)
  • Organizing postgraduate educational courses, including surgical courses as well as workshops and congresses (Salzburg)

Salzburg

Research activities in Salzburg include image-based methods for the quantitative analysis synovial joints tissues and their use in epidemiological and clinical studies, experimental ophthalmological research in the context ocular blood flow and glaucoma as well as the development stem cell-based neural in vitro models and therapies.

Nuremberg

The focus of the research activities at Nuremberg is on molecular mechanisms of the incidence and progression of osteoarthritis, and on the effect of its treatment with anti-inflammatory mediators. Further, primary cell-based in-vitro and in-vivo models are used to study the development of cell- and biomaterial-based methods for the reconstruction of joint cartilage, tendons and ligaments as well as for the characterization of age-related changes in the intraarticular ligaments.

Teaching

The curricular structuring of the anatomy teaching in the study program Human Medicine is identical at both the Salzburg and Nuremberg locations. The teaching contents are conveyed in the same time frames and on the basis of similar didactic methods; the examinations are identical at both locations and take place at the same time.

The teaching in the first year of study is concentrated on the general principles, the systematic, form and function of the locomotor system (musculoskeletal system) and the systematics of the nervous system, including the deformities (Track 1 SYNEMUS) as well as on the systematics, histology, development (embryology), deformities (teratology) and function of the organ systems (Track 2 GEO).

The teaching in the second year of study is focused on the topographical anatomy by independent preparation and cross-sectional imaging anatomy, the preparation for the US medical licensing examination (USMLE) as well as on an (USMLE) update in teratology (Track 3 TOPUS).

A detailed overview of the teaching events in the anatomy subject can be found here.

A graphical overview of the teaching event in the anatomy subject can be found here.

Research

The research projects at the Institutes at the Salzburg and Nuremberg locations are devoted to the form-function relationship in the human tissues and their changes in diseases of the joints (arthrosis), in the eyes as well as in the bones, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels.

The focus at the Salzburg location is on the development of blood-processing methods for quantitative analyses of the joint tissues and their use in epidemiological and clinical studies. Hereby the structures participating in the build-up of the human joints are presented on a time basis and thus functional or disease-based adaptation processes are studied and the effect of the therapeutics on them is tested. Further tasks are focused on the blood flow in the eye, the internal pressure in the eye as well as on the anatomy of the face under the aspect of the aesthetic surgery.

The focus at the Nuremberg location is on the research on the molecular mechanisms of the emergence and development of the arthroses and their influencing by anti-inflammatory mediators. Further studies are focused on the development of cell- and biomaterial-based methods for the reconstruction of joint cartilage, tendons and ligaments as well as the characterisation of age-related changes in the intraarticular ligaments.

Body donation

Your body donation to Paracelsus Medical Private University Salzburg

Paracelsus Medical Private University in Salzburg is authorised to accept body donations in accordance with the Dead Bodies and Burial Act, § 16 section 2a. They serve to the purpose of teaching the students, the further and continuous education of the physicians as well as for research purposes of the medical science.

The word anatomy comes from the Greek language and translated it means cut open or apart (aná "on" and tomé "cut"). It is one of the most important subjects in the education of physicians, physiotherapists, health workers, and many other professions outside of the medical field.

The subject anatomy studies the structure and build-up of the human body. On the basis of anatomic specimens, the future physicians can receive basic knowledge about the structure and functioning of the human body, which will later benefit the treated patients (e.g. the human brain). The already practising physicians can learn or improve complex techniques (e.g. difficult surgical interventions) prior to their use on patients. As a result of the scientific research, answers to current research questions can be found (e.g. new types of prostheses).

On the basis of the constant growth of the medical progress and thus also of the medical knowledge, the constant further education of the physicians and the other professional groups in the specialised medical field is very important. This is because only by constant further and continuous education can a patient be helped using the most modern means. With your body donation, you are helping all professional groups in the curing of the patients and saving human lives.

We would be pleased if you would personally contact us if you decide to make abody donation. You can request our forms per telephone or make an appointment with us for a personal conversation. We take time to discuss open questions with you and are available to help you with words and deeds. You can find detailed information in our information brochure.

However, an body donation to Paracelsus Medical Private University is possible only after completing the 50th year of your life. Please note also that for body donations by people living outside of the Salzburg federal province, we charge an additional payment which is based on the distance of your residence to our university.

The information folder about body donations can be found in the download section.

We are looking forward to you contacting us.
