Die Verbesserung der Englischkenntnisse des Universitätspersonals ist entscheidend, um die Qualität der Bildung zu steigern, ein vielfältiges und inklusives Umfeld zu fördern und den Ruf der Universität auf globaler Ebene zu verbessern. Starke Sprachkenntnisse unter den Mitarbeitenden kommen den Studierenden, der Forschung, den administrativen Abläufen und internationalen Partnerschaften zugute und tragen zum Gesamterfolg und zur Effektivität der Universität bei. Zu diesem Zweck bietet das International Office zwei Englischkurse für Mitarbeitende an.

Course Summary

This course introduces learners to the fundamentals of business English at CEFR A1 level. It builds basic skills in communication and vocabulary for everyday professional situations. Topics include introducing yourself and your company, writing simple emails, making phone calls, scheduling meetings, and engaging in small talk. With a strong emphasis on spoken accuracy and listening comprehension, the course offers role-plays, simulations, and interactive exercises to help students communicate with clarity and confidence in real business contexts.
 

Course Goals

  • Acquire foundational business English skills for beginner-level interactions
  • Build core vocabulary related to the workplace, people, and processes
  • Use basic grammar to express routines, preferences, and requests
  • Practice professional scenarios: greetings, emails, appointments, and phone calls
  • Encourage communication through dialogues and pair/group tasks
  • On completion of this course, students will be prepared to move on to an A2 Level Course
     

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Introduce themselves and describe their job and company
  • Write and respond to simple emails and appointment requests
  • Handle basic telephone conversations (e.g., taking messages)
  • vocabulary for jobs, departments, time, dates, and office equipment
  • Apply simple present tense structures for daily routines
  • Demonstrate polite expressions in business communication
     

Essential Grammar Areas:

  • Personal pronouns and “to be”Present Simple
  • Question formation (yes/no, wh-)
  • Numbers, time, dates
  • Modal verbs: can/could (politeness)
  • Imperatives (for instructions)
  • Prepositions of time/place
  • Sentence structure and word order
  • Basic conjunctions (and, but, because)

Course Summary

This course introduces learners to core communication and language skills required in professional and business contexts at the B1 level. Students will learn to master authentic workplace situations through collaborative activities, role-plays, vocabulary building, and workplace simulations specifically designed for professionals. Essential grammar, syntax and vocabulary will be emphasized throughout the course with topics including professional introductions and networking, business correspondence, meetings,  intercultural communication, and basic negotiations. Students will develop confidence in expressing ideas, understanding professional texts, and participating in business interactions. This course is interactive, with a strong focus on spoken fluency, written accuracy, and professional etiquette. 

Course Goals

  • Develop intermediate-level fluency and accuracy in spoken and written business English
  • Build core vocabulary for professional settings
  • Practice real-world business communication (expressing opinions, handling emails, & telephone calls, take part in meetings, polite customer service)
  • Strengthen intercultural and workplace awareness
  • Encourage collaboration through role-plays, team activities, and simulations
  • On completion of this course, students will be prepared to move on to an B2 Level Course
     

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Communicate confidently in everyday business situations
  • Participate effectively in meetings and team discussions
  • Write structured and polite business emails and texts
  • Handle inquiries and basic negotiations
  • Understand and use business vocabulary and expressions appropriately
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness in international contexts

Present Simple vs. Present Continuous; Past tenses (Simple, Continuous, Perfect); Future forms; Modal verbs; First and second conditionals; Comparatives and superlatives; Present Perfect; Basic passive voice; Reported speech; Question formation; Linking words; Time expressions and prepositions

Course Summary

This course builds on basic English skills and introduces learners to more structured communication in workplace settings. At CEFR A2 level, students expand their vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy, and gain confidence in writing and speaking. Key topics include describing responsibilities, handling customer interactions, participating in short meetings, arranging appointments, and following up on business correspondence. The course includes role-plays, listening exercises, and team projects to prepare students for real-life professional communication.

Course Goals

  • Strengthen language used in common workplace situations
  • Expand vocabulary related to job roles, orders, and customer service
  • Improve accuracy in using past, present, and future tenses
  • Practice real-world communication scenarios (meetings, phone calls, emails)
  • Promote interaction through structured tasks and simulations
  • On completion of this course, students will be prepared to move on to an B1 Level Course

  • Talk about their responsibilities and job tasks

Course Overview 

This course uses a proven framework to build on and develop sophisticated business communication skills at B2 English level. Students deepen their ability to navigate more complex business interactions such as negotiations, presentations, leadership, and strategic communication. Advanced grammar, syntax and vocabulary will be emphasized throughout the course in professional contexts.  Early in the course, learners are trained in presentation and pitching skills and will each deliver a10 minute presentation in a professional context. Further activities include advanced discussions, simulations, case studies, and creative tasks and connect these aspects to real-world applications in order to support their workplace communication at an executive level.

Course Goals

  • Enhance high-intermediate to advanced communication skills in professional settings
  • Develop persuasive speaking and structured presentation abilities
  • Refine business texts and formal correspondence
  • Explore nuanced topics in leadership, science and innovation, and negotiation
  • Build professional confidence and autonomy in English
  • On completion of this course, students will be prepared to move on to an C1 Level Course

  • Participate confidently in advanced business interactions and challenging negotiations
