Institute of Neurointervention

Director // a.o. Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Monika Killer-Oberpfalzer MA

In addition to research and development in the field of neurointervention, the education and training of physicians, students, and radiologic technologists is a core mission of the Research Institute for Neurointervention.

Neurointervention, also known as interventional neuroradiology, neurovascular surgery, or surgical neurology, is a medical specialty focused on the endovascular treatment of vascular disorders involving the brain, spinal cord, head, neck, and other peripheral vascular malformations.

Interventional treatment options include, for example, the management of aneurysms (coiling, balloon- or stent-assisted techniques), carotid stenting, local thrombolysis, clot retrieval, intracranial stents, preoperative tumor embolization, treatment of AVMs (arteriovenous malformations) and AVFs (arteriovenous fistulas), as well as angiographies in interventional settings.

In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards minimally invasive techniques in the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. These interventional methods are continuously evolving to better meet the needs of patients.

Numerous scientific studies demonstrate the effectiveness of various treatment options and serve as a crucial link between research and industry, ensuring that patients receive the best possible therapy.

About us

2000: The "Experimental Angiography" research facility is established at the University of Salzburg in collaboration with the Department of Organismic Biology.

2005: The "Neuroscience Institute Salzburg" is founded as an interdisciplinary research and training center at the Christian Doppler Clinic by Hofrat Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gunther Ladurner. The "Experimental Angiography" facility is integrated into this new institute.

2011: The "Research Institute for Neurointervention" is established at the Paracelsus Medical Private University, creating a broader foundation for achieving both experimental and clinical research at the highest international level.

  • Utilizing existing resources and connections, bringing together internationally renowned scientists, and transferring findings from basic research to clinical practice.
  • Research and development in the field of neurointervention at the highest international level, along with its academic presentation.
  • Continuation and expansion of neurointerventional training opportunities on an international scale, including the development of a master's program in neurointervention.

A key mission of the Research Institute for Neurointervention is the education and training of physicians, students, and radiologic technologists. Through local clinical experience and both national and international collaboration, the institute offers training at the highest level.
