Admission requirements

Requirements for the application

Before submitting your application, please ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Copy of the certificate proving general university entrance qualification: As per § 64 Abs. 1 of the Austrian Universities Act 2002, this can include an Austrian school-leaving certificate (Reifezeugnis), an equivalent foreign certificate, a university entrance examination for medicine, a diploma from a recognized university for a degree program of at least three years, or a certificate from a university-level course of at least three years. Applicants who have not yet completed their final school-leaving exams or entrance exams can submit the certificate later (by the deadline of July 30).
  • Excellent knowledge of German and English (between levels B2 and C1).
  • Latin: The law requires 10 hours of Latin as a prerequisite for medical studies (according to Austrian legal requirements). If you have completed Latin in another form, an equivalency certificate from your school or university must be included with your application documents. If you have not completed the Latinum requirement, you can fulfill it by the end of your first year of study (a course is offered at Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU)). If not completed, you will not be admitted to the second year.
  • A minimum 4-week professional field exploration (internship/volunteering)
  • To demonstrate a critical consideration of your career choice, confirmation of a professional field exploration is required. This is a criterion for the admissions process and must be completed before the start of studies. The 4-week field exploration can be split into segments. If you have not yet completed this exploration, please include confirmation of a scheduled internship.

The following institutions are suitable for completing the internship/professional field exploration:

    • Hospital
    • Nursing home
    • Retirement home
    • Emergency medical technician (practical training must be completed before the start of studies)
    • Regular service with the Red Cross, Samaritan Federation, or White Cross South Tyrol
    • Civil service (if there was direct contact with patients)
    • Voluntary social year (if there was direct contact with patients)
    • Internships as part of training (e.g., physiotherapy or nursing) completed in hospitals or medical practices
    • Volunteering in a medical practice (specialists, general practitioners, or dentists). Important: We recommend not only volunteering in a family member's practice but also gaining experience in other institutions or medical practices.
  • Payment of the application fee
  • Participation in the application process is only allowed twice (e.g., 2024 and 2025).

Applicants from EU countries

Applicants must meet the admission requirements for studying human medicine in their respective country of origin (primary residence). Applicants from Germany do not require consideration from the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (SfH, formerly ZVS).

Information for applicants from non-EU/EWR countries

Restrictions for third-country nationals were lifted with BGBl. I Nr. 2014/82. According to current legal regulations, in order to be registered as a physician in training (in basic education, in training as a general practitioner, or in training as a specialist), a residence permit allowing dependent employment is required (see § 4 Abs. 2 Z 5 ÄrzteG 1998). Applicants with citizenship in countries outside those mentioned above are advised to check in advance whether an Austrian medical degree will be recognized for licensure in their home country or any other countries where licensure may be sought.
