The Center for Anatomy and Cell Biology of the Paracelsus Medical University (PMU) represents the anatomical teaching and research activities at the two locations Salzburg and Nuremberg as a professionally connecting structure.

This currently includes the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology in Salzburg (Director: Prof. Dr. Jan Pruszak), the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology in Nuremberg (Prof. Dr. Gundula Schulze-Tanzil) and a research program for musculoskeletal imaging (Director: Prof. Dr. Felix Eckstein).

The Institutes of Anatomy and Cell Biology are particularly dedicated to teaching and continuing medical education:

  • teaching anatomy in the human medicine and pharmacy degree programs at the PMU
  • the organization of postgraduate training courses, including surgical courses, workshops and congresses

 

The research activities include

  • various aspects of neurobiology and stem cell biology and their application in medicine
  • studies on the dynamic regulation of blood flow in the eye, intraocular pressure and myopia (short-sightedness)
  • the modulation and analysis of form-function relationships in the musculoskeletal system
  • Mechanisms of the development and progression of osteoarthritis and how they are influenced by anti-inflammatory mediators
  • the reconstruction of articular cartilage, tendons and ligaments, as well as the characterization of age-related changes in intra-articular ligaments
