Registration & Admission

Application deadlines are 31 July (start on 1 October) and 31 January (start on 1 March) each year.

The complete application documents consist of:

  • the research plan
  • the supervision agreement (internal or external)
  • the curriculum vitae
  • the school-leaving certificate (university entrance qualification)
  • the degree certificates (Bachelor + Master or Diploma)
  • a photo
  • proof of English language skills

If the research project is to be carried out outside the PMU Salzburg, the PMU Nuremberg, the University Hospital Salzburg or the Nuremberg Hospital, the supervision agreement for external research projects must be used. In all cases, the main supervision must be carried out by a habilitated person from the PMU & Clinics in Salzburg or Nuremberg.

If you would like to have an independent assessment of your research plan before the application deadline, please send the plan by e-mail to the program director in Salzburg prior to the submission deadline.

 

Proof of English language competence

For applicants whose native language is not English, the following rules apply:

  • If your language of birth is German or you are fluent in German, you must provide proof of English as a foreign language up to upper secondary level II (ISCED 3) at school, but English does not have to be a final school-leaving examination subject.
  • if your language of communication is neither English nor German, you must provide proof of English language proficiency (spoken & written) at level B2
  • language proficiency can also be demonstrated by completing English-language degree programs

 

Admission requirements

  • a university entrance qualification (Matura, Abitur, Fachabitur) or a comparable qualification
  • a Bachelor's degree with at least 180 ECTS + a Master's degree with at least 120 ECTS
  • alternatively a diploma degree with at least 300 ECTS

Missing documents can be submitted up to 6 months after the start of the program at the latest. Deadlines are issued by the head of degree program as conditions for provisional admission.

 

The admission process

  1. Once all applications have been received, the formal admission requirements are checked first.
  2. All selected applicants will receive an invitation to the online PhD Admission Interview. The online interview is conducted in English and lasts approximately 30 minutes. In the first 10 minutes you will present your research project. This is followed by a short discussion about the planned work. The main supervisor must be present. Co-supervisors are welcome to take part in the discussion.
  3. Admission is granted by email.
  4. At the beginning of the semester, all new students take part in the PhD kick-off event in Salzburg with online access.
  5. The training contract can be signed at the kick-off (external students receive the contract by post)
