Project content

The NEALS randomised controlled clinical trial evaluates a nature-based health promotion programme for people transitioning from work to retirement. In cooperation with the Naturfreunde Salzburg and the Salzburger Alpenverein, a 10-week intervention consisting of weekly guided hikes with mindfulness training in the Salzburg countryside is being carried out.

The aim of the study is to scientifically investigate the effects on participants' biopsychosocial resilience - operationalised by health-related quality of life, empowerment and social connectedness. Secondary endpoints such as cardiorespiratory fitness, mindfulness, stress perception and physical activity will also be assessed. The study follows a two-group design with a wait-list control group and involves 110 participants. Data will be collected longitudinally over three time points.

The Institute of Ecomedicine at the Paracelsus Medical University of Salzburg is the scientific leader. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Naturfreunde and the Alpenverein Salzburg and is funded by the Salzburg Health Promotion Fund.
