
Center for Public Health and Healthcare Research
The Center for Public Health and Healthcare Research (ZPV) of the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg was founded in May 2018, with the aim of multiprofessional, interdisciplinary and evidence-based management of the complex tasks of the healthcare sector of the future.
The ZPV, which focuses on primary care, was founded by the Institute of General, Family and Preventive Medicine (head: Dr. Maria Flamm), the Institute of Nursing Science and Practice (head: Dr. Jürgen Osterbrink) and the Institute of Pharmacy (head: Dr. Johanna Pachmayr) of the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg. These institutes view the ZPV as a joint multiprofessional and interdisciplinary mission.

Mission
Healthcare research, especially in the primary care area, has become of great relevance in the healthcare sector due to the epidemiological and demographical development and the challenges associated therewith. Thanks to its diversity of professional skills and years of experience in healthcare research, the Paracelsus Medical University (PMU) is especially well-suited for reducing the expectations of various stakeholders to a common denominator by means of evidence-based recommendations. A multiprofessional, interdisciplinary and evidence-based approach is the only way to master the complex tasks of the healthcare sector of the future.
Goals
The Center for Public Health and Healthcare Research of the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg has the following main goals:
- Basic and applied research on public health issues
- Basic and applied research on healthcare issues
- Basic and applied research on primary care issues
- Basic and applied research, in particular for the benefit of patient groups with special needs (e.g., increased need of protection, vulnerable patient groups, very elderly)
- Multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary work on current themes in the field of healthcare research
Tasks
Organization and further development of research consortia for:
- Issues with new healthcare models
- Multiprofessional, integrated cooperation
- Avoidance of over-, under- and inappropriate care
- Multimorbidity and polymedication
- Integration of e-health approaches in primary care
- Strengthening of patient skills
- Targeted education, continuing education and advanced training of family practitioners and other healthcare professionals
- Targeted and structured funding of healthcare research
- Publication of healthcare research results for both the scientific community and laypersons
- Optimization of data access for, e.g., funding agencies, health policies
- Integration of healthcare research in the education of all health professions
Holding of event series and symposia that document the profile development in Salzburg
Establishment of instruments for sponsoring young researchers
Mutual support of the three leading institutes in obtaining external funding
Representation of research interests of the three leading institutes of the Center for Healthcare Research before the University and the public
Public relations work in the area of public health, healthcare research and primary care
Implementation of the Public Health Masters Degree Program
