Institute of Research and Development on Advanced Radiation Technologies (radART)

Head: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Falk Röder

Administrative management: Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Christoph Gaisberger

The Institute of Research and Development on Advanced Radiation Technologies (radART) performs application-oriented research and development in order to produce technologies, methods and knowledge, which makes progress in the radiation therapy in the highly precise and effective treatment of patients suffering from tumours possible.

Thereby, in the areas of medical physics, information technology, robotics, imaging and radiation biology, secure and economically optimised healthcare solutions are developed, which are clinically applicable and can be controlled, evaluated and further improved in patient environment at the Salzburg university hospitals, among others.

In cooperation with the medical technology and the pharma industry, prototypes and concepts are developed and tested. The cooperation in this area is going to transfer the industrial innovations and knowledge from the integration of the new technologies in the work processes in a clinical environment; however, it must be made sure that the new technological developments are supported functionally and on a wider base by commercial providers.

Research

The institute has developed and continues developing key technologies, methods and systems, which can be transferred to commercial use by one or several industry partners and patented worldwide. However, this takes place only to such an extent that is necessary for the acquisition of financing from third-party funds / research orders.

Publications are going to focus on the progress. The developed solutions are made available free of charge also to the scientific community for further assurance and in wide, international cooperation for collaborative acceleration of the developments and for preparation of the use of target-oriented, new technologies.

The institute does not have the objective to develop the innovations into market-ready, commercial products with calculated, economic use – this remains reserved for the industry and can, if necessary, be transferred to newly founded companies (spin-offs). However, its task is to work innovatively in the immediate clinical field and propose, optimise and make known prototypes, methods and systems which make an improved radio-therapeutic treatment of cancer patients possible, and thus also contribute to the wide use of more efficient solutions in the hospitals worldwide.

The institute is obliged to the networking of the radiation therapies, in which information technologies will be developed and they will support extramural consultations and services of highly specialised methods of treatment in connection with a quality-assured standard therapy on a hospital-wide basis. These technologies must make possible also the participation in multi-centric studies which should be initiated for raising the quality standards in the radiation therapy.

Main research priorities:

  • Adaptive image-guidance workflows and protocols for photon and particle radiation therapy
  • Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) reconstruction
  • CBCT image quality optimization
  • Dual-Energy CBCT
  • Flat-panel software-based image correction for x-ray imaging pipelines
  • 2D/3D and 3D/3D image registration and tracking
  • Deep / machine learning for x-ray image processing and use in radiomics
