Institute for Spine Research
Research

The Institute for Spine Research focuses primarily on clinical research, with key areas in minimally invasive surgical techniques and the evaluation of comprehensive reconstructive procedures. Since its founding in 2010, the Institute has been an integral part of the Schoen Clinic Spine Center network.

A dedicated registry, established in 2010, allows for the systematic data collection on all surgical procedures. Annually, the Spine Centers of the Schön Clinics treat around 15,000 inpatients, of which approximately 7,000 undergo surgery. At the München Harlaching ocation alone, 1,800 to 2,000 spinal surgeries are performed each year.

The data collected from thousands of patients not only supports internal quality assurance but also provides valuable scientific insights into the progression and outcomes of various spinal treatments. The data is crucial for both single-center and multicenter studies, and its compatibility with registries like the Swedish Spine Registry, enables international benchmarking and comparative international studies.

The institute also conducts epidemiological studies to develop preventive measures aimed at reducing the incidence of back pain. Our approach is interdisciplinary, extending into fields like internal medicine and anesthesiology, especially given the growing number of older and multimorbid patients.

Additionally, the institute has launched a cross-center initiative in the field of bariatric surgery. Recent collaborations have established a connection to basic research, expanding the scope of scientific investigation from clinical conservative and surgical medicine to basic research.
