Abstract

Background For elderly and very elderly homosexual people, the preservation of their identity in the care context is often difficult. In addition to the generally prevailing taboo or devaluation of sexuality in old age, homosexual persons are also often confronted with heteronormative structures up to experiences of discrimination. Literature on ethical action in health care already takes up the claim of nonexclusivity. Respect and dignity must be in first place in this regard and should be given equally to all persons. Research question and aim The aim of this narrative review is to draw on scientific literature to identify ethical approaches and nursing support services that can assist in preserving the identity of elderly and very elderly (> 60) homosexual people. The question is: "How can the identity of homosexual elderly people be preserved through caregiver support?" Methods Using a narrative literature review, six relevant studies were identified. The search was conducted in the PubMed and CINAHL databases. Results Three main categories were identified that were relevant to the topic of homosexuality in aging with its challenges and overarching recommended actions: education and training of professionals, structural frameworks, and a safe environment through needs-based care. Conclusion Caregivers can promote the preservation of the identity of homosexual older people through recognition in the form of attention through care and social appreciation. It is also important that homosexual people are given equal legal and structural status in the care context and beyond. An examination of ethical principles and approaches is essential for this.
