As part of an festive academic ceremony on 20 September 2024 at Hangar-7 in Salzburg, 63 graduates of the Human Medicine program at Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) in Salzburg were awarded their Doctor of Medicine degrees and took the Geneva Oath. The new graduates from the Class of 2019 were joined by esteemed guests and university dignitaries, including Rector Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Sperl, Vice-Rector Prof. Christian Pirich, and Dean of Medicine Assoc. Prof. Florian Wichlas, together with many proud family members and friends.

Salzburg’s Provincial Councilor for Health and PMU Foundation Board member, Mag. Daniela Gutschi, congratulated the graduates on “a milestone in your lives. The medical profession is more than a job—it is a calling. You have chosen to dedicate yourselves to the service of others' health. As doctors, you hold not only medical but also social responsibility. We hope you enjoyed your time in Salzburg enough that many of you will remain here. But wherever your career may take you, the future of medicine offers many opportunities, and you will play a key role in shaping it.”

PMU Rector Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Sperl congratulated the graduates of this “very special class” on their well-deserved achievement after five intense years and encouraged them, “Dare to forge new paths. Understanding medicine as an art of healing means that you will experience moments where you combine knowledge, skills, diligence, flexibility, timing, relationships, and sensitivity with patients to find creative, new solutions. Be driven by the desire to patiently uncover the causes of illness, to thoroughly document medical histories, to listen, and to identify and apply the best therapies—and sometimes take individual, creative approaches.”

"Medicine is not just a science—medicine is also an art. As we say in English, 'Medicine is both a science and an art.' The art in medicine lies in applying the findings of science to individual patients," emphasized Prof. Dr. Christoph Griessenauer, Head of the University Clinic for Neurosurgery at Salzburg University Hospital and an alumnus of PMU’s first medical class in 2003, during his moving keynote address, which he opened with three challenging examples from clinical practice. He advised the graduates: "Now more than ever, medicine is a dream profession, and you are just at the doorstep to an exciting world. But your future career is not a sure-fire success. It’s up to you to make the most of your studies. So far, you have only scratched the surface of medicine. Every medical discipline and specialty has a depth that is still difficult for you to imagine. That’s why it’s crucial to be ready to keep learning. Stay humble and listen to each another. Treat each other with respect in everyday clinical practice. Embrace a flat hierarchy and give each other autonomy. Always put the patient first. Don’t be misguided by economic temptations and pass on your knowledge to the next generation."

The traditional graduate speeches were delivered by class speakers Dr. Eva Schweizer and Dr. Christian Stammkötter.
