Forschung zum Anfassen: Pluskurs-Schüler*innen zu Besuch an der PMU

How is new knowledge created—and what does modern research really feel like? Recently, students participating in the Salzburg state’s advanced course “Medicine – Therapy – Research,” led by Mag.a Nisveta Decker, had the opportunity to find out firsthand at the Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU).
During their visit, participants gained exclusive insights into two key areas of biomedical research: the Institute for Tendon and Bone Regeneration and the Institute for Molecular Regenerative Medicine. There, they not only observed the daily life of scientists but also took an active role.
Hands-on experience in modern laboratory work
Guided by PMU research teams, the young people carried out essential steps in biomedical research themselves. These included:
- Performing histological staining
- Working with cell cultures
- Examining samples under the microscope
This made what had often seemed abstract in the classroom immediately tangible. The students were able not just to observe research but to shape it themselves—an experience that left a lasting impression on many.
Early support creates career prospects
The advanced course offered by the state of Salzburg aims to strengthen individual talents and provide targeted support for young people’s strengths and interests. Scientific institutions like PMU play a crucial role by offering such practical insights.
“Experiences like these show how important it is to inspire young people about science early on,” emphasizes PMU. “Supporting the individual strengths of students is not just a special opportunity for us, but a clear educational mission.”
The visit once again highlighted how motivating direct access to research can be for young people. Curiosity turns into genuine interest, which often develops into a concrete career aspiration.
Programs like the advanced course create an important space where talents can grow, questions are encouraged, and science becomes a little more tangible.
