Event “Global Spotlight Gastein”. Focused on Nature-Based Therapies

On 19 November, the Gastein Valley was, for the first time, part of the international “RESONATE Global Spotlight Series” – following previous stops in Singapore, Padua, South America, and the United Kingdom, the series has now reached the German-speaking region. The traditional health destination provided an ideal setting and underscored its importance for research and healthcare provision. The event was moderated by Christina Pichler, a researcher at the Institute of Eco-Medicine at Paracelsus Medical Private University. She also serves as Case Study Lead for nature-based therapies in metabolic syndrome within the RESONATE project. Among the speakers was Arnulf Hartl, Head of the Institute of Eco-Medicine at PMU.
Highlights included the presentation of new study results on nature-based therapies, a plenary session, and a joint visit to the Gastein Healing Gallery. Around 70 participants attended the hybrid event (online/on-site).
Study Presentations
Both randomized controlled trials were conducted partly in Gastein:
- the WIWA2 study on nature-based rehabilitation for chronic back pain
- the GIDEX study on nature-based gerontoprophylaxis and the “rejuvenation” of the immune system in adults aged 65 to 75
The data show that a two-week combination of hiking and applications of Gastein’s natural healing resources measurably strengthens the immune system, and that effects on well-being and quality of life can last up to 180 days after the intervention. The results provide important evidence for nature-based therapies as building blocks for healthy ageing and pain management.
Nature-Based Therapies
In the plenary session, discussions addressed topics such as translating research findings into practice, insurance-related questions, and tailoring interventions to different target groups. Within the Spotlight Series, Gastein positioned itself as a hub for DACH-region dialogue between science, practice, and the healthcare system.
Visit to the Gastein Healing Gallery
To conclude the event, participants experienced the Gastein Healing Gallery on site – an atmospheric highlight for the regional and international guests, including representatives of the RESONATE project partners.
