National competition Jugend Innovativ: The student project OvoView from HTBLuVA Salzburg, in collaboration with PMU, wins first place!
Within the nationwide school competition 'Jugend Innovativ' organized by the Federal Ministry of Education in Austria, four students from HTBLuVA Salzburg secured first place in the ICT & Digital category out of a total of 109 submissions, winning a prize of €2,500. The winning project, "OvoView," was inspired and supported by the Institute for Tendon and Bone Regeneration at the Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU).
What exactly does OvoView do? Drugs aimed at inhibiting blood vessel growth are tested on eggs in the early stages of incubation. Previously, measurements were taken manually. Now, thanks to the inventive spirit of the four students from HTBLuVA Salzburg, this process is automated, objective, and less invasive. In the project "OvoView," supervised by Prof. Herbert Tempfer and co-managed by PMU, the young researchers developed a bioreactor that allows the visualization and measurement of growing blood vessels in chicken eggs. Katharina Reindl, Leticia Schubert, Julia Wimmer, and Paula Schachinger not only built the reactor hardware but also developed the imaging and analysis software. They optimized the conditions within the reactor to ensure the survival of the eggs. This device will help the Institute for Tendon and Bone Regeneration gain a better understanding of blood circulation in healthy and diseased tendons.
The PMU and HTBLuVA Salzburg have been successfully collaborating on joint projects for nearly ten years and have secured first place with a research project for the third time this year.
