Since February 2024, Univ.-Prof. Anne Mahringer has led the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy at the Institute of Pharmacy at Paracelsus Medical University (PMU) in Salzburg. On September 25, she delivered her inaugural lecture, 'Tailored Nanoparticle Design to Overcome Biological Barriers – Current Developments and Perspectives,' captivating the audience in the EVER Pharma Auditorium at PMU. Among the distinguished guests was Professor Dr. Gert Fricker, Director of the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology at Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg. Anne Mahringer completed her PhD under Fricker's supervision in 2009 and later continued her research as a postdoctoral fellow in his lab. Even at that time, her focus was on a key question: how to effectively transport drugs across human barriers, such as the blood-brain barrier.

In her opening remarks, Univ.-Prof. Johanna Pachmayr, Head of the Institute of Pharmacy at PMU, introduced Mahringer with these words: 'I am thrilled that you are here and have brought your outstanding expertise to Salzburg and the PMU, not only for the valuable resaerch connections, but most importantly for our students.' She noted that Mahringer had already made a strong impression, being named 'Teacher of the Year 2024' by the first-year Master’s students after just a short time at the university. This recognition also highlights her teaching skills, Pachmayr added. PMU Rector Univ.-Prof. Wolfgang Sperl summarized it succinctly: 'You are truly an asset to PMU!'

About Anne Mahringer

Anne Mahringer (born 1980 in Mannheim) studied pharmacy in Heidelberg and earned her PhD summa cum laude in 2009 (theme: 'Drug Transport Across Barrier Systems' focusing on ‘Drug Resistance at the Blood-Brain Barrier’). As a postdoctoral researcher, she gained specific expertise in methods for predicting drug permeability through the blood-brain barrier during multiple research stays in the USA (Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, Maine; National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, North Carolina) and Sweden (Uppsala University). In 2017, Mahringer began her habilitation at Ruprecht-Karls-University, and until her move to the PMU in early 2024, she served as an academic advisor in teaching and research, focusing on 'Drug Delivery Across the Blood-Brain Barrier Using Nanoscale Drug Formulations.'"
