Intensive care nursing, anesthesia nursing and perioperative nursing: 42 graduates from three university courses celebrate their graduation
42 reasons to celebrate: 21 participants of the university's “Specialized Intensive Care Nursing” program, 9 from the “Specialized Anesthesia Nursing” program, and 12 from the “Specialized Perioperative Nursing” program successfully completed their challenging courses. On September 19, in a festive ceremony at the Jörg Rehn Auditorium of the PMU, the newly minted "Academic Experts" were awarded their well-deserved certificates by PMU Rector, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Sperl, and the Dean of Nursing Science and Head of the Institute, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Osterbrink.
The graduates, who are qualified nursing professionals, hail from various hospitals and clinics across the provinces of Salzburg, Upper Austria, Styria, Vienna, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg. Completion of these one-year, modular university programs qualifies them to competently fulfill the highly complex tasks outlined in the Austrian Health and Nursing Act (§20 GuKG) in their respective specialized fields.
"Each year, more than 1.1 million surgical procedures are performed in Austria alone, ranging from newborns to elderly patients—people whom you will accompany and care for in the years to come. With your training here at the PMU, you have gained invaluable tools for this demanding role," said Dean of Nursing Science, Jürgen Osterbrink, who himself is a trained anesthesia and intensive care nurse. He warmly congratulated the graduates, emphasizing, “Education is the foundation of professionalism!”
"Care requires education and knowledge," echoed Dr. Ines G. Hartmann, Nursing Director at Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital in Schwarzach, during her keynote speech. She congratulated the graduates on behalf of the Salzburg Nursing Directors Association (ARGE) as well, saying, “You all come from the same foundational training and then chose to specialize in a particular field. Today, you have achieved one of your important professional goals: with the completion of your specialized training, you are now legally qualified to continue working in your specialized areas. Over the past year, you have made great strides in your journey toward professionalism."
Program Director Sabine Zapf-Pingert MScN BA encouraged the graduates to "embrace the passion and courage to critically reflect on all aspects of your nursing profession. In doing so, you not only contribute to your own satisfaction but also to the advancement of the nursing profession as a whole." She added, “Be proud of your profession. Value your achievements and your professional work by actively applying your knowledge, skills, and expertise. Stay motivated, engaged, and confident in your role as a nurse.”
